The New Words in The Dictionary

Aug 20th 2010
hi Like

Got this list from Time Magazine (really via @twitter ).  As always, some interesting stuff on this list.  Lately, so much of these lists are driven by the web.  Amazing that the course of our entire vocabulary is mostly driven by our online interactions.  The term “Social Media” has become so ubiquitous in my world that I really don’t want to hear it anymore.  Anybody with me?  It’s like that song on the radio that’s just been played to death!  But, I digress…

I’d like to suggest a few additions of my own, such as Escape Velocity and Man-Friend (a term my daughter uses to describe friends of mine that are the other fathers of her softball teammates)

Here’s the Time Mag list:

chill pill a notional pill taken to make someone calm down
chillax calm down and relax
turducken a roast dish consisting of a chicken inside a duck inside a turkey
bargainous costing less than is usual or than might be expected; cheap or relatively cheap

fussbudget a fussy person
vuvuzela long horn blown by fans at soccer matches
national treasure someone/thing regarded as emblematic of a
nation’s cultural heritage
buzzkill a person or thing that has a depressing or dispiriting effect
social media websites and applications used for social networking
microblogging the posting of very short entries on a blog
netbook small light laptop
dictionary attack an attempt to gain illicit access to a computer system by using a very large set of words to generate potential passwords
paywall an arrangement whereby access is restricted to users who have paid to subscribe to a website
freemium a business model, especially on the Internet, whereby basic services are provided free of charge while more advanced features must be paid for
automagically automatically and in a way that seems ingenious, inexplicable, or magical
carbon capture and storage the process of trapping and storing carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels
geoengineering manipulation of environmental processeses in an attempt to counteract the effects of global warming
toxic debt debt which has a high risk of default
deleveraging the process or practice of reducing the level of one’s debt by rapidly selling one’s assets
overleveraged having taken on too much debt
quantitative easing the introduction of new money into the money supply by a central bank
exit strategy a pre-planned means of extricating oneself from a situation
overthink think about (something) too much or for too long
catastrophizing view or present a situation as considerably worse than it actually is
soft skills personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people
matchy-matchy excessively colour-coordinated
LBD little black dress
frenemy a person with whom one is friendly despite a fundamental dislike or rivalry
cheeseball lacking taste, style, or originality
cool hunter a person whose job it is to make observations or predictions about new styles and trends
hikikomori the abnormal avoidance of social contact, typically by adolescent males (in Japan)
steampunk a genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advance technology
tweetup a meeting organized by means of posts on Twitter
bromance a close but non-sexual relationship between two men
wardrobe malfunction an instance of a person accidentally exposing an intimate part of their body as a result of an article of clothing slipping out of position
defriend another term for unfriend (remove someone from a list of friends or contacts on a social networking site)

Gwinnett Batting Cages

Aug 9th 2010
hi Like

kids baseball teamI’ve been doing a lot of baseball and softball batting for the last month.  My son just decided at the ripe old age of 12 that he wants to play Mill Creek baseball this fall, so we’ve been practicing every single day to get ready for the tryout.  (btw, the tryout was yesterday and he did really great!).

Jack City is the only batting cage that’s really close to Hamilton Mill, but there are several others within a 10 minute drive.

I’ve made a quick list here:

I also did a search on BattingCageFinder.com and that was pretty accurate (interesting niche business, huh?)

If you’ve found any others, please drop a comment here and let everyone know.

Food Drive at Hamilton Mill / Compassion in Action Weekend

Sep 13th 2009
hi Like

This will be my 3rd year in a row leading a very big food drive in the Hamilton Mill area as a leader for Compassion in Action weekend – in cooperation with 12Stone Church.   It’s a really cool opportunity for all of us to give SO MUCH back to our community with just a few short hours of effort.

Last year we collected an amazing amount of food and delivered it to the Lawrenceville Co-op.
Hard to believe but there are families right here in Gwinnett that have a huge need (now as always)

This is certainly something that parents and kids can both be part of.

Now’s the time to sign up (takes 2 seconds)

The first step is having each person (parents and kids) sign up here:

Everyone gets a CIA t-shirt but they have to sign up really soon (like this week).

After you to the site, there’s a list of different activities.
The Hamilton Mill food drive is the very first choice (and the best one :)

btw, if you can’t be there on Oct 3rd, we also need lots of help with flyer distribution during the week before.
Also, if you can only help for an hour or two on Saturday, that’s fine too. Just come when you can!

Regards,

Matt Fagioli

ps. please feel free to call me with any questions or ideas

Duncan Creek Park Now Open – Just in Time for Summer

May 22nd 2008
hi Like

If you live near Hamilton Mill, you’ve probably been waiting for the new park to open on Hwy 124. The new Duncan Creek Park located on Braselton Highway at Pine Road opens today! This park is minutes away from everyone in Hamilton Mill.

The official grand opening for the park is scheduled for June 14th, but county officials decided to open to the public today since school is out and there will be plenty of kids looking for new activities.

Duncan Creek park features 110 acres and includes a skate park for bicyclists, skateboarders, and rollerbladers. It also contains a football field, sand volleyball courts, and a playground. Also, the new Hamilton Mill library branch will be added at the park’s entrance later this year.

hi Like

Hamilton Mill ID cardWell, I got my pool badge in the mail today! I guess summer is almost here!

Believe it or not, this weekend the Hamilton Mill pools are open. Both pools are on an abbreviated schedule thru May 21st (that’s when Gwinnett County schools get out) After that, the schedule is, of course, much longer — for the long days of summer. Then, this fall, the schedule is short again — after August 10th. Here’s the schedule thru May 21st:

Lakeview Pool at Hamilton Mill schedule for May 10 to May 21

Sunday thru Thursday: 10am to 8pm / Friday & Saturday: 10am to 9pm

(Gwinnett County Schools are in session thru May 21)

Millview Pool at Hamilton Mill schedule for May 10 to May 21

Friday: 4pm to 9pm / Saturday: 10am to 9pm / Sunday: 10am to 8pm

(Lakeview is only open on Weekends thru May 21)

Hamilton Mill’s 1st Movie Theatre Will Open Next Month! (June 2008)

May 6th 2008
hi Like

You’ve probably heard the buzz about the great new movie theater coming to Hamilton Mill this summer. In fact, everyone is realizing now that it will be “THE” place to be at Hamilton Mill this summer & all the hot summer movies will be playing on the big screen right there. It’s opening right by Kohl’s and the Hamilton Mill Home Depot — across Hwy 124 from Starbucks & the BB&T bank.

There really has not been much talk about the details. We pride ourselves on knowing everything about what is going on with Hamilton Mill real estate — even commercial real estate like this movie theater. But, up until know, there really wasn’t much to know.

Great Escapes contacted Diamond Dwellings today and gave us some more details. The theater is tentatively scheduled to open in late June. It is called “The Great Escape 14 in Dacula”. The facility is 52,000 square feet with stadium high-back 24″ riser rocker reclining seats! It will have Full Impact DTS Digital Surround Sound. Plus, it also boasts a first-of-its-kind Digital Auditorium and 3D projection system too.

The first six months will include many huge movie attractions such as Iron-Man, (Disney’s Hot Blockbuster) Narnia II, Deception, Incredible Hulk, Untraceable, Batman, Indiana Jones, James Bond, Beverly Hills Cop 4 plus many many more Top Blockbusters–ensuring maximum movie attendance and interest in this fabulous mega theatre!
